Style Assignment Blog Post #3

   Report on Jan Jasinski
By Stanley Crawford

My favorite photographer has to be Jan Jasinski. Jasinski is a Polish/Canadian photographer that photographs aviation and landscapes. Jasinski is currently twenty years old and is based out of Ottawa, Ontario and has grown up his whole life in Canada.  He is a pilot and aircraft technician in addition to being a photographer. Jasinski started photography at the fairly young age of eleven and has essentially taught himself. This, to me, is very impressive considering how difficult it is to master a DSLR camera and all the years of hard work it takes.
Overall, my favorite aspect of Jasinski’s work is his aviation photography.  I especially love his artistic editing style and incorporations of interesting backgrounds in order to further bring the photo to life.  One of the primary reasons Jasinski is one of my favorite photographers is that since I have began my own hobby of aviation photography I have used his shots for inspiration as well as observing his editing process has allowed me to improve my own. I personally love the angles that he is able to get and almost every single one of his photos seems to be taken in perfect lighting! My personal favorite shots of his are the shots of heavy aircraft departing, photographed during golden hour. In my opinion they are very interesting and beautiful to look at and they are my favorite because I absolutely love to capture that perfect golden hour shot as well.
My three favorite shots of his are all aviation shots, and while his landscapes are still fantastic, I just prefer aviation photography. The first of my three favorite shots is a shot of the massive Airbus A380, the largest passenger jet in the world, taking off out of Los Angeles over a bunch of palm trees. This is especially interesting to me because it is, of course, taken at Golden hour and the palm trees underneath the airplane add a particularly dramatic effect to the shot. This may end up being the one I attempt to replicate although most likely not.  My second favorite shot of his is two Air Canada aircraft in Vancouver. The shot is set in the winter with one of the aircraft sitting on the ground while the other one appears to land directly over it in the background. What makes this particularly appealing is that the entire background is a mountain range covered in snow, with a light mist rolling off of it. I have taken a similar shot in Las Vegas back in December that I would like to replicate in the editing process.  My third favorite shot of his is a person parachuting in the Swiss Alps. Again this is another very dramatic photo with another solid background of snowcapped mountain ranges. All of these photographs would be extremely hard to recreate however over time as I further develop in skill level I hope to be able to capture similar shots.

Overall I find Jasinski’s shots to be very impressive and his style has become an inspiration for me in my photography!
